Richard and Jeanette's church meetings begin at
the lovely hour of 9:00,
so everybody was up bright and early. The church building is about a fifteen-minute drive away, so I figured the
ward would be pretty large. It wasn't; it was tiny--only forty or fifty members in all. Instead of benches,
the little chapel holds only chairs, and it has a very small organ and no piano. I really liked the atmosphere;
it was very friendly and informal, as if everyone were saying, "Let's sit down and chat about the gospel over crumpets,
shall we?"
Nicole (Richard's daughter) gave a talk in Sacrament
Meeting titled "Having Fun." :-) It was very good, and she'd worked diligently on it. She spoke about
looking for the best in every situation, having an optimistic attitude, and faking friendliness and enthusiasm when the situation
requires it. It was ironic, because today's situation definitely did require false enthusiasm on her part
because she was feeling so ill that she had to have a blessing after church. Poor girl!
After church, we had a delicious dinner of barbequed
lamb and vegetable kabobs. I tried some of the lamb (I’ve never eaten a sheep before!), and the flavor was quite
different from beef. After dinner, the family ate a whole plate of barbequed onions and then roasted s'mores over the
coals. Let me tell you--Cadbury chocolate makes all the difference in s'mores! Mmm.
After that, we all lazed around, chatted, looked
at Danielle's wedding pictures, talked about my sightseeing plans with Dylan (they insist that I MUST find time to take him
to Windsor Castle!), and eventually ended up watching the old Cary Grant/Katherine Hepburn classic, "Bring up Baby."
What a fun movie! Around 7:00, I got to participate in a Saltzman family
Sunday tradition: crepes. I've only had crepes once before, and they're really very good! We filled these
with Nutella, ice-cream, and bananas. Then I napped a bit, answered some e-mails, chatted online with Kati, and typed
up this account of the day.
Soon after, I. . .zzzzzzzzzzzzz
P.S. The Saltzmans might take Dylan and
I to Cambridge to look around the city and go punting next Sunday. That
would be so much fun! They claim that if I like Oxford, I'll love Cambridge
because it's so much prettier. My friend Maria is studying there right now, so I'd be able to get in touch with her
again if we went, too. What fun!
